Bio

I am an associate professor of anthropology at Simon Fraser University.  I was trained in linguistic and cultural anthropology, and my current research centers on psychological anthropology, specifically the connections between psychology, subjectivity and political economy. In my forthcoming book, Unknotting the Heart: Unemployment and Therapeutic Governance in China, I examine the role of psychology in alleviating the effects of mass unemployment and the attendant mental health “crisis” since the mid-1990. While I am committed to the study of the mental health of vulnerable groups, I have also started a new project on the so-called guan xinbing, “officials’ heartache” to examine the relationship between mental health and political structure in China.
